What the customer faced:
A solid oak front door doing its job on a lock that wasn't: an old imported mortice case with worn levers, a key that needed jiggling, and an insurer's renewal letter asking whether the door met British Standard. The owners loved the door and didn't want it butchered to fix the lock.
What we did:
The old case came out and was measured against a certified replacement: a mortice deadlock tested to BS EN 12209, sized so the existing pocket needed only careful easing rather than re-cutting. The new lock went in with a matching escutcheon and a thumbturn on the garden door, faceplates sitting flush in the oak. Standards evidence in writing for the insurer.

The job in detail
The door was the best thing about the house front — solid oak, decades old, moving sweetly on its hinges. The lock was the worst: an imported mortice case with levers worn to guesswork, a key that needed a practised jiggle, and an insurance renewal letter asking pointedly about British Standard locks.
The owners’ one condition was that the door not be butchered. That starts with measuring, not chiselling: the old case came out and went against the tape — case depth, backset, faceplate length — so the certified replacement could be chosen to fit the existing pocket. The lock that went in is a mortice deadlock tested to BS EN 12209 and Certifire-approved, with the case sized so the oak needed only careful easing, not re-cutting.
The faceplate was let in flush, the keep aligned so the bolt throws on a fingertip, and a matching escutcheon fitted over the cylinder. The garden door got the same treatment with a thumbturn inside — key security outside, no hunting for keys on the way out. The customer got the standards markings photographed and the part named on paper for the insurer’s file. The door keeps its character; the lock finally deserves it.
