What the customer faced:
The back door of a ground-floor flat had been getting stiffer for weeks. Then one morning the handle went completely floppy: the door wouldn't lift to throw the hooks, wouldn't lock, and the family were wedging a chair under it at night. A window firm had already quoted for a whole new door.
What we did:
The gearbox inside the multipoint strip had failed — a known failure on doors this age, and the part that takes all the strain. The exact model was identified from the case stampings, the replacement named and priced in writing, and the new unit fitted and timed the same visit. The keeps were re-aligned so the door locks without lifting a fight.

The job in detail
The customer described it perfectly on the phone: the handle on the uPVC back door of their ground-floor flat had gone “like a wet rag” — no resistance, no lift, no lock. They’d been wedging a chair under it at night, and a window company had already told them the whole door needed replacing.
It didn’t. When a multipoint door stops lifting and locking, the failure is almost always the central gearbox — the small cast mechanism the handle drives — not the hooks, not the strip, and certainly not the door. The old strip came out, and the gearbox was exactly as expected: the drive follower had sheared inside the case after years of the door being slammed against misaligned keeps.
The failed unit was shown to the customer, the replacement was identified from the case stampings and backset measurement, and the part was named and priced in writing before fitting. The new gearbox went in, the hooks were timed, and the keeps were adjusted so the door now locks with two fingers on the handle instead of a shoulder under it. The misalignment that killed the old gearbox is gone, which is what gives the new one a fair chance of a long life. Labour from £69, total price agreed before travelling — no VAT added.
